How to Teach Your Dog a Competitive Retrieve!
I'm really excited to share this training video with you. Even though the audio has a few flaws, the instructions are very professional and well-explained. As I've mentioned before on my channel, Dave van Garderen was one of my first mentors in dog training. I owe a lot of my success to learning from him.
In this video, Dave works with two of his students on the competitive retrieve. He's acting as a helper for his students while they train their dogs. As he explains, his job is to help prevent and minimize any mistakes the dogs might make. This is important for competitions since even small mistakes can mean the difference between winning and losing. He trains his students to win.
Dave also explains how and why they are using the techniques demonstrated in the video to train the dogs. This helps show the dogs that they must listen to their handler's guidance, even when they prefer to do something else, which improves training reliability. If you want to become a professional dog trainer trained at a higher level than most others, I recommend checking out Kennelwood Academy and learning from one of the best in the world.
If you're passionate about dogs and want to turn your love for them into a successful career, my number one recommendation is Kennelwood Academy. Their level of commitment and dedication to their students and understanding of dog training is second to none.
Dave is a seasoned expert in the industry and has helped countless individuals launch successful careers in dog training. Don't miss out on the opportunity to learn from him and achieve your dream career.

    Hi Nate! Becoming a dog trainer here using engagement based training. I assume I'll run into clients who don't want to feed by hand for a number of reasons. If after encouraging them to be willing to try, if they still do not want to, how crucial is this and in addition to at least general correct placement location on floor ( i.e. side, front, etc) any suggestions re this? TIA!

    • @NateSchoemer
      @NateSchoemer День тому

      @@CamilleGG451 If they don’t want to use food to motivate the dog, then you can try to use toys and praise, but it can be significantly more difficult to get precision. In addition, you can use leash pressure training to help guide the dog into the correct positions, which is often enough for basic obedience. Hope this helps. Cheers!

      @@NateSchoemer Thanks Nate! I just meant if they don't want the dog taking the treat directly from their hand, how much less impactful is it if the treat's placed on the floor instead?

    @nateschoemer Thank you so much for this!! NO trainer has ever taught me this so this is tremendously helpful! How do i help my dog (a 9m old beagle) to not staying that close to me as i walk backwards? I see that your pup is coming right up against your hand. My dog kind of wait for bit of distance from my hands before starting walking and following. 🙏🙏 thank you for the tips!

    When spacing out your rewards and on a variable or random reward schedule, my question is this. Do I have to reward every time I use the terminal marker in training “free” or should I have a non reward terminal marker as well like “break”

She’s broken skin many times 😭 I’ve redirected with toys, with treats, but I’ll try this method and see if it works

    How long do you train each step if that makes sense ? For example do you spend a few weeks on "yes" before trying to lure? And what ages would you recommend to start each step?

    I need to retrain my dog. He's a yorkie and has behavioral issues like, being aggressive around other dogs (this is new 95% he's fine but then sometimes he bites me in the process of taking him away from another dog) doesn't come when I call him while we're outside, at home he listens. He's very smart but stubborn.

    I wish I could find the way how I could get all these training sessions with Nate himself. If I’m going to spend thousands of dollars on becoming a dog trainer, I certainly do not want video trainings. I want to be there, to learn quickly and well. In all the videos I've watched, (hours and hours and hours again I’ve watched different videos) it's Nate's training and approach that I prefer. If only I could find a way to communicate with him directly, this would be the pinnacle for me! But unfortunately, I'm not capable of finding him no where 😢

    I don’t say this with any judgement, only as kind suggestion. Learn how strengthen vocabulary by removing filler words such as “like” and “you know” or “I think”. These often come across as weak and scattered. I wish this young woman the best no matter. Our society definitely needs great dog trainers, behaviorist, etc.!

  • @2ATactical
    @2ATactical 10 днів тому

    Question on markers. My pup is 9 months old. As far as markers go we have used the clicker as a terminal marker, i have also used “yes” and more recently i have been saying “good” i do not have a continuation marker and thus my dog will break any command in which i need to mark the behavior without releasing her upon using any marker. I watched your video on teaching the markers and i would like to switch to the “yes” and “free” markers. I realize i have already been a bit inconsistent and I am wondering if switching my commands now would be too confusing for the dog by switching the meaning of yes to a continuation when in the past it was a terminal marker. I am very disciplined in my methods but am still learning. I intend to become professional and i want to implement your marker system permanently and stay consistent not only with my current pup but with dogs i work in the future. Thanks
